Background

This data set includes the list of 1,929 Leova, Moldova citizens who were registered to vote in the 1937 election for mayor.  This list is particularly important because it documents many of the town’s residents just a few years before the war.  As no contemporary census exists, this list may be the best resource available for documenting Leova’s pre-war residents.

The transcription of names, while time consuming was rather straightforward.  As my knowledge of Romanian is limited, I consulted various resources when translating the "occupations" column.  My primary resource was the JewishGen list of Romanian Occupations.  Thank you to Paula Zieselman and Terry Lasky for preparing this resource.  In addition, I used online dictionaries, and consulted with Mrs. Yocheved Klausner of Be'ersheva Israel for assistance with the last few I was unable to figure out on my own.

The "Comments" column was particularly challenging since most of the comments were handwritten.  Once again, I consulted with Yocheved Klausner and also with Moldovan Archive researcher Alla Chastina for assistance.  Even with all of this expert assistance a few of the handwritten comments have remained undeciphered.
